Exactly what we needed! The new SHSAT has added editing and revising to the test for the first time, taking away scrambled paragraphs and logic. The Argo books are a great way to practice these new sections. Having a book that focuses on Editing and Revising is especially helpful because there aren't many published. Any of the old SHSAT handbooks have plenty of reading comprehension sections to practice with and 90 percent of the Math is exactly as it was - -with the exception of 5 questions that are not multiple choice. We have been very happy with this volume. If you are thinking of going to a specialized High School, you must practice for the test to be competitive and this is a great book to use.
Wonderful bookGreat book !!!! My daughter loves it . She found it very useful and so did I . The book is s little challenging, but that's exactly what they need to prepare for a very difficult test .
Very helpfulGreat purchase!
Five StarsGood book
Worth reviewing to ensure that you are familiar with the rules of grammar being tested, as they are not all intuitiveIf you're reading these reviews, you are likely already familiar with the SHSAT and its purpose. The test is used to determine who will be admitted to the specialty high schools in New York City. At just 105 pages, there's not a whole lot here, but this appears to be one of two SHSAT prep books available from Argo Brothers -- the other contains five full-length practice tests. Argo Brothers also publishes Common Core workbooks for primary grades and a GRE preparation guide. This workbook focuses exclusively on Revising and Editing. It contains 52 revising/editing problems involving single sentences, 50 problems involving full paragraphs, and 56 problems that require revision of a single sentence within a written passage. The problems seem to test one's understanding and knowledge of discrete rules of English grammar and usage, with no focus on comprehension or creativity, and no recognition of the fluidity and evolution of language and usage. In our area (not New York City), grammar is no longer taught as a separate subject, and the grammatical rules apparently tested by the SHSAT get little, if any, attention in the classroom. Although the contents and rules are not complex, they might be challenging to someone who hadn't learned them in a formal setting. This book might help educate the test-taker and alert them to rules that they may otherwise be unfamiliar with.
How do you get a good score on the SHSAT? Practice, practice, practice! The items in this practice book look and feel comparable to the new sample SHSAT tests that the NYCDOE released in their free downloadable practice booklet. This is a good thing as practice makes perfect, and the more access your child has to quality practice tests, the more likely he or she will get a score that will guarantee placement in a school. Caveats? 1. The written explanations, while accurate, are not very good and do not encourage generalization of concepts beyond the specific practice questions. 2. The video tutorials are nothing special. 3. This slim volume ONLY includes the ELA section of the test. Be sure to read this carefully before buying! I'm not sure why Argo would sell separate ELA and Math booklets. If anything, the Math section of the SHSAT is the more difficult one and is usually the section that separates the cream of the crop from the rest. The newer version of the ELA section (formerly Verbal) has been dumbed-down pretty dramatically.
